Washington County Hiring Deputy Sheriff

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office is currently accepting applications to hire two Deputy Sheriffs immediately. Qualified applicants will be placed on an eligibility list maintained by the Washington County Civil Service Commission.

The Sheriff’s Office will conduct a Civil Service Entry-Level Examination as needed when a sufficient number of qualified applicants are received.

Testing Information

Physical Agility and POST Testing will take place on Saturday, March 21, 2026

Applicants will receive additional details prior to testing.

Pay & Benefits

  • Starting Wage (Effective July 1, 2025):
    • $31.16/hour (entry) to $40.98/hour (7-year step), depending on experience
  • Vacation:

    • Two weeks earned annually starting out
    • 40 hours of vacation granted after 30 days of employment
  • Schedule:
    • 12-hour patrol shifts
    • Every other Friday, Saturday, and Sunday off
    • 80 hours per 14-day pay period (6 – 12-hour shifts and 1 – 8-hour shift)

Retirement (IPERS)

Deputies are enrolled in the Iowa Public Employees' Retirement System (IPERS) Protection Occupation Class. Under the legislation effective July 1, 2024, eligible members may retire at:

  • 80% benefit
  • 1.5% annual COLA
  • With 30 years of service and age 50 or older

Lateral Transfers & Incentives

  • Lateral transfers are encouraged
  • Iowa certified applicants through the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) may receive up to 7 years of credit toward pay and vacation, depending on experience
  • Signing bonus and/or reimbursement of prior employment agreements may be offered at the Sheriff’s discretion
  • Iowa certified candidates are not required to complete physical agility or written POST testing for consideration
